Royal Canin: Giving Your Pet What Is Best For Them

If you think that all commercially available pet food products are the same, think again. Many of them contain ingredients that don’t meet your pet’s nutritional requirements. Also, each breed of dog and cat has different nutritional needs at each stage of development – something that most pet food manufacturers overlook. Luckily, there’s a brand that understands exactly what dogs and cats need to stay healthy.

The Royal Canin brand of pet food was founded in France in 1967 by a veterinarian named Dr. Jean Cathary. Using his extensive knowledge about pet nutrition he was able to develop a line of dog food that targets the actual nutritional requirements of the dog, not what the dog owner thinks his or her pet needs. By 1970, the Royal Canin dog food line included separate products for puppies and adult dogs. From then on, Royal Canin continued to develop food products that were tailor made not just for a dog’s age, but its size and breed as well. Using the same logic of creating age, size, and breed-specific foods for our furry friends, the company branched out to produce cat food as well. Aside from commercially-available pet food, some of the products under the Royal Canin brand are also exclusively distributed to veterinary clinics and veterinary surgery centers. These exclusive products primarily cater to pets like neutered and spayed cats and pregnant dogs that have specific medical and nutritional needs.

Today, the Mars-run Royal Canin brand of pet food is available all around the world through an extensive network of distributors. Aside from the brand’s signature products, Royal Canin has also been involved in the production of several other well-known veterinary grade pet food brands. This came after the company’s acquisition of the Medi-Cal, Techni-Cal, and IVD brands from Del Monte Foods in 2004.
