Every business’ success story starts out small until it grows into a
thriving business empire. The same can be said about Domino’s Pizza which
started out in 1960 when brothers Tom and James Monaghan bought a small pizza
store in Ypsilanti, Michigan called DomiNick’s Pizza. The following year, James
sold his share of the company to his brother and as sole owner of DomiNick’s,
Tom changed his store’s name to Domino’s
Pizza in 1965.
By 1978, there were already 200 company-owned and franchise stores
open across America and by 1983, that number rose to 1,000. In 2010, Domino’s
Pizza opened its 9,000th store worldwide. The road to success for Domino’s
wasn’t easy. The company faced a trademark infringement lawsuit in 1975 filed
by Amstar Corp., maker of Domino Sugar. Five years later, a Federal court rules
in favor of the pizza chain saying there was no trademark infringement. The
company faced other challenges throughout the years, but still came out on top.
Throughout the years, Domino’s Pizza was able to establish itself as
a true leader in pizza delivery services not just in the United States, but all
over the world. In the US alone, Domino’s delivery drivers cover 10 million
miles on a weekly basis. That is proof that when it comes to pizza delivery,
Domino’s is the first on everybody’s list.
The company’s growth was slow and steady, and each milestone is
cherished by the company and its employees. It may have taken some time, but
Domino’s Pizza slowly but surely climbed its way up to the top. In 2011,
popular business website Business Insider named Domino’s Pizza as one of America’s
10 Largest Restaurant Chains. With the emergence of different fast food and
fast casual restaurants in the market, this honor is one that shouldn’t be
taken lightly.
