Contour Makes First-Hand Storytelling Possible for Outdoor Enthusiasts

Stories of action, adventure, and travel are best told through the eyes of those who have experienced it. Technology has made this possible; cameras and hand-held video recording devices have it easy for outdoor enthusiasts to document their experiences. However, these devices also pose certain limitations, especially when the activity of the explorer involves the use of both hands.

As such, Contour, formerly known as VholdR, created a device that allowed modern-day explorers to record their stories. They introduced hands-free video cameras and other similar adventures storytelling tools that make it easy for anyone to shoot an action video and share it.

Contour was established in 2003, by two undergraduate students and avid skiers Marcos Barros and Jason Green. Both teamed up to enter a business plan competition at the University of Washington, inspired by an idea to create helmet cameras which can record their skiing exploits. It was the perfect opportunity for them, since they have always wanted to share the thrills and spills of their escapades, but obviously this was impossible to do with a hand-held camera, not to mention that grueling conditions of the snowy mountains that can cause damage to camcorders.

Barros and Green made an impressive business proposal and won third place in the competition. Propelled by their success, the duo decided to pursue their plans and rented out a chilly warehouse to build a prototype of their product. After a period of development, the two friends introduced the Twenty20 Helmet Camera, a clear capture hands-free helmet recording device.  It became a commercial hit among avid outdoorsmen and women, especially those who enjoyed extreme sports such as skiing.

Forbes named this creative company one of America’s most promising. Over the years, Contour has continued to develop a series of innovation that makes first-hand storytelling through video possible.
